Joint Clinical Research Centre
For Excellence in Medical Research, Training and HIV Care
In response to the increasing human subjects' research being conducted the Joint Clinical Research Centre - Institutional Review Board (JCRC - IRB) was registered on August 27, 2002, both in Uganda and the USA and is fully certified by the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology (UNCST). It is internationally recognized with its own Federal Wide Assurance No - FWA00001293 and registration number IRB00002647. It supports both national and international research protocols.
Purpose and Scope
The main purpose of the JCRC IRB is to review the science and ethics of both national and international proposals/protocols submitted to JCRC, while safeguarding the rights, safety and welfare of the research participants involved. The JCRC IRB has the authority to modify the research proposals/protocols, approve, suspend or terminate any studies, which are found to violate the ethical guidelines and the status of the IRB approval, and to oversee the approved studies thereafter. It is also the duty of this Board to provide confidential, independent, competent reviews and approvals. In all its activities, it is mandatory that the Board keeps the UNCST posted on all the IRB decisions - a requirement which IRB has followed since its inauguration.
Composition
The JCRC IRB is composed of five medical doctors, two veterinary doctors, one Lawyer, two paediatricians, one social scientist, one nursing officer and one administrator. Click here for detailed list of their qualifications and institutional affiliations.
