The JCRC Kakira Regional Centre of Excellence
Overview
The Kakira RCE is located in South East Uganda, 90 Km from Kampala along the Uganda - Kenya highway. The RCE commenced operation in 2004 under the USAID funds as a Centre to serve the TREAT sites in East-Central region. Initially housed within the confines of Kakira Sugar Works Workers' hospital, the RCE later moved to a JCRC-owned premises outside the sugar-factory complex in mid-2008 and is currently operated by sixteen staff.
Under the TREAT project, the RCE provided HIV treatment and care services to over 3000 clients, and was supporting the Jinja Regional Referral Hospital (RRH), Iganga RRH, Kamuli RRH, Kayunga hospital, Kawolo hospital, Kakira Sugar Workers' hospitals and Bugembe, Mpumudde, Walukuba, Buwenge Health centres IV.
Activities
Patient Care: Currently, the RCE operates an ambulatory out-patient clinic majoring in HIV/AIDS treatment covering Antiretroviral therapy and treatment for Opportunistic Infections, while collaborating with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), Strengthening TB and HIV Responses in East-Central Uganda (STAR-EC) Project, Baylor, AOET and St Francis Health Centre to implement the SUSTAIN and THALAS projects.
Operational Research: The RCE has participated in several research collaborations including the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), Malaria Study with Pfizer, the JCRC Children Study (JCS), PrEP, RAND collaboration, and most recently EARNEST clinical trial.
Laboratory services: The RCE is the regional referral laboratory for the THALAS project.
