The CASE-JCRC Centre for AIDS Research (CFAR) Virology laboratory
The CASE-JCRC Centre for AIDS Research (CFAR) Virology laboratory was established in 1998 with support from the CFAR and Forgarty training grant. This laboratory has the capacity to perform a number of assays including viral propagation, Drug resistance testing for the reverse transcriptase and protease regions for patients on ARVs, DNA PCR techniques, automated DNA sequencing for sub-typing and drug resistance testing as well as most techniques which are routinely performed by advance molecular biology laboratories. This laboratory contains all the modern equipment required for molecular virology including a thermocycler, microcentriguges, agarose gel apparati, and UV tranilluminator, and gel documentation system. In addition to genotypic drug resistance testing, the lab is in the process of starting phenotypic drug resistance testing. The lab is VQA certified to run viral loads. It is also involved in different external quality assurance schemes for drug resistance. These include the TAQAS (Treat Asia Quality Assurance Scheme) and the VQA from NIH. It is in the process of being WHO accredited for drug resistance testing.
