A JOURNEY OF OVER 30 YEARS

Our History

HIV/AIDS was first identified in Uganda in 1982. A national sero-survey conducted in 1988 established the average prevalence rates at 9% of the adult population. By 1990, AIDS cases had been reported in almost all parts of Uganda. HIV infection rates rose and peaked in 1992 with some districts of Uganda registering HIV infection rates of over 30%.

The JCRC was established in 1991 in response to a request by the President of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta for a scientific solution to the HIV epidemic that was ravaging Uganda.

The JCRC was established through a joint partnership of three government i.e. Uganda Ministry of Health, Makerere College of Health Sciences and Uganda Ministry of Defense to provide high-quality comprehensive clinical care and conduct of clinical research on HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. Over the years JCRC’s mandate has moved beyond HIV to address other health conditions such, Sickle cell disease, NCDs, etc

JCRC's Impact Journey

Dr. Cissy Kityo Mutuluuza, MBChB, M.Sc, PhD Executive Director JCRC

The Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) is an autonomous organization that was established in 1991 as a limited liability not-for-profit joint venture between the Uganda Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Defence and Makerere University Medical School (now Makerere College of Health Sciences).

The Centre was established to respond to the HIV/AIDS challenge which was at the peak by that time. On Behalf of the Board, Senior Management, staff, and volunteers of the JCRC, I extend my sincere gratitude to all those that have supported us to be able to serve our communities and clients.
